The Burlington Symphony Orchestra is a full-size community orchestra serving Burlington, Hamilton, and the surrounding areas. We perform in the magnificent Burlington Performing Arts Centre in downtown Burlington. We demystify classical music and make this great art form accessible. Our musicians—highly skilled amateurs, students, and professional players—feel privileged to share this great music with the communities we live and work in.
We began in 1973 as the McMaster Symphony Orchestra, left the university to become Symphony Hamilton in 1988, and rebranded as Symphony on the Bay in 2011 to reflect our role in the wider Hamilton-Burlington community. We made our new home in the Burlington Performing Arts Centre in 2011. In 2019 we rebranded to the Burlington Symphony Orchestra.
Distinguished musicians have held the post of Music Director, including Lee Hepner (1973-1986), Matthew Airhart (1986-1988), Clyde Mitchell (1990-1995), James R. McKay (1995-2014), Claudio Vena (2015-2018) and Denis Mastromonaco (from 2019).
The Burlington Symphony Orchestra is considered one of the finest orchestras of its kind in Canada.
